I’m putting together some wingshooting clinics this summer. This video shows the method we use. It’s a variation of the Churchill or Instinctive method of shooting.

This video will help you build the sight picture of how the shot comes together. Watch it numerous times. Focus only on the leading edge of the bird. The…[Read more]

Here I’m checking on some of our released coveys of partridge. This is where we practice a different aspect of my training method. What I call “Fair Chase” training. Birds are banded, free released and given plenty of time to run and form coveys before we work any dogs on them. After training and shooting a few birds,…[Read more]

This video shows how we encourage a natural retrieve. It’s natural because I leave the pups free will intact and allow her to choose her options. This is how we build trust and really see a dogs natural talent and abilities.

Higgins Gundogs are trained and managed to a high level. They must be able to adapt to new and unusual situations and control their excitement level. We want to see all their style and intensity, but they must choose to remain steady. Here, we’re proofing a seasoned dog. This is Greg Belanger, HGDH and his dog HGD…[Read more]

Here is Jax, a nice young Lab pointing his bird. Reagan is the shooter.
When it comes to dogs (like Labs) that have been bred to flush birds, I like to give them the freedom to choose their strategy, to work with their strengths. If a flushing dog demonstrates a talent for pointing, and the type of hunting he’ll be…[Read more]

Tonight I tried “The Walk”. I had tried it when Annie was younger but decided at that time she couldn’t keep her mind on anything longer than 10 seconds so I put the leash away. Tonight when I put it on her she FOUGHT it. She bit the leash. She laid down and pulled it off with her front legs. She jumped up and spun like a top. I did my best…[Read more]

      • I tried the walk again with your suggestions. I definitely was keeping the pressure on her rather than tapping. I especially was doing that when she was applying the pressure so it kept getting worse. I’ll post a video tomorrow of it. She is better… Or maybe I am better. By the end of the session I was holding the leash very lightly. That helped…[Read more]

    • Here is a copy of an e-mail I sent a client recently. He had a question about my “Packleader Leash” including how to transition to a regular collar. His e-mail began with how to get his dog to stop pulling or lunging forward on the leash.

These are typical issues when dogs are learning that the space out front has…[Read more]

Ekahi learning the steady to scent strategy.
Steady to scent is when a dog smells a bird and goes on point, no matter how far from you, it waits until you get there to finish it up. The most important thing about teaching this strategy , you have too have good wild acting…[Read more]
