Congratulations to Martha Zimet and Sophia. They both recently earned their Higgins Gundog titles. Martha for demonstrating great handling skills as well as her ability to see things from her dogs point of view. And Sophia for her cooperation and willingness to work together with her human pack member toward a common goal (getting a bird in her mouth).

  1. I am honored and privileged to attain our Higgins Gundog Team Titles. We did this in less than a year, driving to Lincoln from Santa Cruz once a month to train with Brad and Katy. Sophia had been through the wringer: she had several ‘whoa’ trainers before Brad, had competed in AKC Field Trials for over a year, and wanted nothing to do with me as her handler. I wanted a relationship with Sophia, so I started the journey with Brad and Katy. We started Sophia over at the basics on the magic brush pile, just as if she was a baby dog who knew nothing, building our trust and cooperation along the way. Soon, Brad reminded me that Sophia was more advanced than I was, so I had my work cut out for me, and had to step up to the plate in handling her. Today, Sophia is an amazing hunting gundog and I handle her. I have also learned that problems in the field are handler error and have nothing to do with the dog. My ego took a beating on that one, but today Sophia and I are an awesome team!
