Curious if you do anything in particular to prevent or cure hard mouth. Sometimes my Annie is pretty aggressive with her bite… But not always.

    • Hello Wendell,

Chewing on birds or being hard-mouthed is caused by the pressure you are putting on her to retrieve. People bring me hard mouthed dogs to fix all the time. One of the first things I do is remove all pressure to retrieve. After I say “fetch”, I walk away in the opposite direction. After just a couple of birds, she will go get her…[Read more]

      • we were training fetch with dead birds, often in the field as a reward for steadiness on training birds – holding through wing and shot – stopped when he started bringing me back dead birds at field trials – ones I don’t think he caught and killed – well maybe, all happening at 200+yds, can’t see on foot – have concluded training with dead birds…[Read more]

        • Hello Jack, welcome to our community page.

We don’t train for field trials or tests. My method is designed to bring out all of a dogs natural drive, style, intensity and focus for upland hunting (foot hunting) and wingshooting. Goals for field trials are considerably different. If you like, I can post some videos showing how we get a dog steady…[Read more]

Here’s the video of the walk after switching from steady pressure to tap tap tap. https://youtu.be/uDMZPI6HFc4

I tried the walk again with your suggestions. I definitely was keeping the pressure on her rather than tapping. I especially was doing that when she was applying the pressure so it kept getting worse. I’ll post a video tomorrow of it. She is better… Or maybe I am better. By the end of the session I was holding the leash very lightly. That helped…[Read more]

  • My gun introduction is very good now. She looks like she might be leaning something. https://youtu.be/yRkiFsKAqaw

Tonight I tried “The Walk”. I had tried it when Annie was younger but decided at that time she couldn’t keep her mind on anything longer than 10 seconds so I put the leash away. Tonight when I put it on her she FOUGHT it. She bit the leash. She laid down and pulled it off with her front legs. She jumped up and spun like a top. I did my best…[Read more]

    • Hey Wendell, give me a call. This can be fixed in 5 minutes.

    • Here is a copy of an e-mail I sent a client recently. He had a question about my “Packleader Leash” including how to transition to a regular collar. His e-mail began with how to get his dog to stop pulling or lunging forward on the leash.

These are typical issues when dogs are learning that the space out front has…[Read more]

A good intro to a blank shotgun tonight. Her mind was all on the bird. Definitely created a good association.

That should be surprised not striped. The pic is later in the yard. She didn’t know why I wanted her to be still. 😀

Just did a gun introduction with my pup. I had already done it with a starter pistol very successfully. With the pistol there was NO reaction to the sound. Today I used a shotgun blank from 50 yards years away and she jumped a bit when it went off. She immediately went back to chasing the birds but bummer. I put the gun away and we have more…[Read more]
